Beginning around 2008 it was noted that many families whose homes were constructed with toxic drywall from China became aware of a noxious odor being emitted from the walls within their home. By April, 2009 over 300 families had reported various problems resulting from the toxic drywall.

They reported construction defects such as corroded electrical and mechanical systems to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the U.S. government agency responsible for regulating the safety of consumer products. By January the number had grown to almost 3,000.

Many homeowners began to experience health issues, prompting their doctors to urge them to move out of their homes.  Today there are almost 4,000 reports of toxic Chinese drywall in 42 states.
